The Stagehands' Strike: James Marino Keeps Score

I got an email earlier today from James Marino about his BroadwayStars post analyzing the stagehands' strike, now in its third rancorous day.

James asked me to offer some thoughts about his post, and because we are colleagues and friends, I feel I should keep those thoughts confidential.

For those who read my earlier rant about the producers, this may seem hypocritical. Well, it's not the first time I've been accused of hypocrisy. (Or writing trivial posts -- this link requires some reading.)

Yet even in that rant, I made it clear that I'm in agreement neither with the stagehands nor the producers -- indeed, despite my rant, I did say that the anti-featherbedding argument is hard to refute.

And I do think that James' post is very well written and very well reasoned.

For that reason, I strongly urge you all to take a look at what James has written and I'll happily moderate any comments that follow.

James, kudos on an excellent, well-thought out piece!

Unfortunately locking out the actors and more importantly, the theatregoers, at this crucial time does no one any good. If anything the strike plays into the hands of the producers, who can easily pin the "grinch who stole broadway" label onto Local 1.
